Sharyn Singer N.D. Naturopath

What is Naturopathy

Naturopathic Medicine, also known as Naturopathy, is a distinct system of healing - a philosophy, science, art and practice which seeks to promote health by stimulating and supporting the body's ability to regain harmony and balance.

Its philosophy is based on these principles:

Harnessing the healing power of nature
Finding the cause of the problem not just treating the symptoms
Doing no harm by enhancing the natural ability of the body to heal in its own time
Treating the whole person by looking at physical, mental, emotional and spiritual as well as genetic and bio-chemical uniqueness
Education through supporting and nurturing to empower the individual to guide their own healing process
Prevention rather than cure

Naturopaths believe that most ill health stems from obstacles that disturb the body's normal functioning. These obstacles can result from such things as inadequate water, poor diet, lack of fresh air or exercise, exposure to harmful substances, stress and other factors that can affect physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Symptoms occur as a result of the body attempting to adapt and regain balance. For example, a fever occurs when the body temperature is raised as a result of an infection. It increases the circulation of blood, lymph and nutrition to areas where it is needed, removes toxins and destroys bacteria and viruses which live and reproduce in a very narrow temperature range. Naturopaths believe that taking medication to lower the fever can interfere with this process. Of course there are times when a fever needs to be brought down and a naturopath would advise accordingly.

The Naturopathic Approach

As a Naturopath, I use a variety of methods, tools and procedures to gather details and
information in order to make the most appropriate recommendations for therapy.

Evaluation:
Discussion
Questionnaire
Food and beverage diary
Physical assessment or examination: structure, pulse, blood pressure, reflex points
Iridology (eye examination with a lighted magnifying lens)
Kinesiology (muscle testing)
Laboratory tests (if necessary)

Treatment:
Recommendations for treatment are based on the use of:

Nutritition - healing whole foods and diets with special emphasis on the appropriate foods, cooking methods and balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats for the individual.

Nutrients - vitamins, minerals, essential fats, amino acids

Herbs, Homeopathic and Flower remedies

Hydrotherapy - application of water at different temperatures externally either as baths, poultices, wraps (usually done by the individual at home)

Exercise and Relaxation techniques

Naturopathic Body Adjustment - gentle soft tissue manipulation

Referrals for other therapies may be recommended

Naturopathy can help the following:

Digestive problems, skin, headaches, PMS, menopausal symptoms, fatigue or low energy, food intolerances, asthma, stress, immune problems, fertility problems, pregnancy, feeling under par with no specific complaints and much more…

About me:

I began my career as a hospital nurse in the US in 1971. During that time, I realized the beneficial and detrimental effects food could have on health and left nursing in1981 to study nutrition and the healing potential of food.

I worked in a community nutritional program for pregnant women, infants and children and did natural foods catering part time. In 1983 I left nursing to buy a health food store and develop the catering business which focused on special diets and menus for events from 2-600 people.

In 1991 I came to England with my British husband. Here I qualified in Naturopathy from the London College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Science in 1996 and Kinesiology from the Middle England School of Kinesiology in 1991 and have recently studied Herbal Medicine and Iridology.
.
I have a private practice at the WellBeing Clinic in Oxford, as well as clinics in Moreton-in-Marsh, Bloxham and Birmingham. I also teach, write and speak on nutrition and healing foods.

I am a co-director and faculty member of the London College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, a member of the British Association of Nutritional Therapists, the Kinesiology Federation and on the executive committee of the Speedwell Trust.

Private sessions, talks, workshops, nutrition courses available
