Why have counselling?
People come to counselling to help them deal with various difficulties in their lives. For example, you may be stressed, depressed, anxious or experiencing difficulties in personal, family or work relationships. You may be grieving or you may find that you are upset and distressed and there seems to be no reason. Counselling can provide a safe, neutral place for you to explore what is happening and to consider how you are feeling about it.
What is it like to work with a Counsellor?
Counselling gives you the opportunity to talk about whatever is troubling you with someone who is not involved in your personal life and who is qualified to help you understand yourself better, to relate more positively to others and to think about circumstances in new ways. Often our early experiences of love, hate, loss and our relationships with parents, carers and siblings lay down patterns that affect us in adult life. It is often helpful to think about current problems in relation to these early experiences. You will not be told what to do but will be helped to find your own answers. By exploring your problems with me you may find a new way of looking at yourself and find that you are in a better position to make decisions and to choose for yourself what you want to do.
Can seeing a Counsellor make me worse?
Counselling may open up old hurt and wounds that need to be worked through in order to find more appropriate or successful ways to think about the difficulties you face in daily life. This may be a painful process, and you may feel worse before you begin to feel better. I do not have a magic wand to make everything better; any changes that you make will be those that you have chosen.
What about confidentiality?
Counselling is confidential. The exceptions to this are if I believe that there is a possibility of serious harm to yourself or others.
How long does counselling last and how much does it cost?
I work on a short-term or more open ended basis. Appointments last for 50 minutes once or twice weekly. I work within the BACP Code of Ethics for Counsellors and Psychotherapists. The fee is £40 a session but in cases of financial difficulty this amount can be negotiated.
How do I arrange an appointment?
Please telephone me on 01865 760246 to arrange an initial appointment so that we can talk about your problem and see whether I can help you. This initial appointment will not commit you to further appointments unless we agree to work together.
